The Ancona School

The Ancona School was founded in 1962 by five families who wanted their children to have a child-centered, experience-based education in a learning community characterized by parental involvement and racial, cultural, and economic diversity.

The curriculum embraces the innate curiosity and need for hands-on participation that is a part of every child. Each child is helped to develop the tools and the knowledge with which to become a happy, responsible member of the community at large. In the Montessori pre-primary, children are empowered through choices and independence. An innovative curriculum in open, multi-age classrooms continues throughout all grade levels.

The school offers Spanish, starting in extended day (kindergarten), art, music, and physical education. Technology is an integral part of the integrated curriculum. Grades three through eight participate in overnight camping trips during the year to broaden their environmental awareness and to develop their independence and responsibility outside the classroom.

The school is located on Chicago’s near South Side in the neighborhood of Hyde Park-Kenwood.The facilities include a library, art center, and gymnasium. The outdoor area has a large playing field and a playground.
